LUCAMALEONTE

Bio

Born in 1983, in Rome, where he still lives and works today. A graduate of Rome’s Central Institute for Restoration, he created his first works on Roman walls in 2001. The constant drive to perfect the stencil technique has made LUCAMALEONTE an artist with an unmistakable style. He has exhibited in over 50 solo and group exhibitions, from 2004 to today (London, Rome, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, the USA, Australia). In collaboration with STEN&LEX, he is the organiser of the International Poster Art festival in Rome. In 2010 and 2011, he was invited, along with the Orticanoodles, to host two workshops at the MART Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto. He was recently hosted by the Italian-Brazilian Embassy for the Mural Italia-Brasil project, for which he created several murals in Salvador in Brazil (2012). In recent years, he has exhibited in several museums around Europe and continues to travel to paint murals around the world.

Antrodoco 2021 “Fioritura” (Blooming)

Location of piece: Entrance arch to the Town Hall from Via Roma – Antrodoco (RI)

Description:
“As soon as I saw the arched architectural structure that was to be home to my artwork “Fioritura”, I realised that I would not be able to end things there”. It was immediately clear to LUCAMALEONTE that he was basically obliged to transform the passageway into a small, natural treasure chest that would envelop all those who pass through it and highlight his first artwork in that location. The work that now faces “Fioritura” is called “Endless Game”. It is a meeting/clash between a dog and a cat, animals that are normally diametrically opposed but that on the wall become accomplices in a game that has been frozen in time and is therefore endless, which distorts the stereotype and folklore that usually considers these animals to have opposing natures. The peaceful coexistence of the two creatures is set in lush natural surroundings, which, just like in “Fioritura”, frames the passageway. The ceiling forms a link between the two artworks. The artist has deliberately left the background white to give the work more room to breathe, while at the same time highlighting the architectural elements in grey, which rhythmically punctuate the piece. At the centre of the vault, he inserted another geometric element, this time a circle, as austere as the pre-existing grey cornices, but which, at the same time, blends into the green lines of the macroscopic nature that embraces the entire passageway.

Techniques:
Brush and roller painting on wall.

Materials: Painting, Rollers, Brushes

Calcata 2022 “ Liberi come gatti” (As free as cats)

Location of piece: Theatre – Via Papa Giovanni XXIII – Calcata (VT)

Description:
The piece covers two walls and takes advantage of the fact that it is separated into two surface areas in order to reflect on dualism.
The front of the theatre features a structure similar to a stage, framed by red drapery like a curtain, against a backdrop of scenographic flowers and, at the centre of the scene, there are two symmetrical cats. The installation is arranged so that the cats are placed above the entry doors to the structure, positioned to protect the theatre, like Roman firedogs, both decorative and symbolic.
Life on stage is a life spent trying to simulate reality, where the scene imitates reality, but it never has the strength to narrate life in its entirety; it sacrifices authenticity. The cats lose their feline nature and seem to become motionless statues – protagonists in the scene but merely decorative at the same time.
The wall continues around a corner and here the true nature of the animal is shown. Behind the scenes and away from prying eyes, cats are free to be themselves, and the protagonist of this second section of the piece is a much larger cat, who is focused on playing with flower petals, interacting with the scenery and moving around freely as if filled with the feline spirit.
